Balwearie High School is a non-denominational comprehensive school, catering for boys and girls from S1 to S6. The school has a Department of Special Education covering stages P1 to S4.

The school was opened as a comprehensive in 1972 and is essentially composed of two blocks linked by a bridge corridor. There are two cafeterias, a library/Information Centre, gymnasium, swimming pool and Games Hall. The school is attractively set within its own spacious grounds which incorporate a 400m blaes running track, pitches for football, hockey and rugby, and tennis courts.

The senior management team of the school consists of the Headteacher, Depute Headteacher and five Assistant Headteachers. Subject Departments and Guidance are managed by Principal Teachers with support from Assistant Principal Teachers.

The total staff complement of the school is 138 teachers, 9 instrumental instructions, 27 clerical/auxiliary staff, 5 technicians, a librarian and 4 janitors.

The day is divided into six 53 minute periods. There is an 12 minute registration period at the start of the day.
